England v Poland qualifying draw World Cup finals in Brazil

England are going ghostbusting at Wembley on Tuesday night, chasing away the spectre of that 1973 qualifying heartache to Poland and of a more recent anguish haunting the current generation.
Steven Gerrard carries an image in his mind that needs banishing: “a big massive picture of the Croatia game in 2007’’.
England’s captain, who also led Steve McClaren’s team out on that soaking, Godforsaken wretched evening of Nov 21, 2007, has mentioned the misery of that 3-2 defeat and failure to reach euro 2008 to the younger players in Roy Hodgson’s squad. He has also discussed Croatia 07 with the senior players.
Gerrard believes young and old will all respond strongly, doing better than the World Cup qualifying draw that cost them so dearly against Tomaszewski and Lato, Deyna and Domarksi 40 years ago.
Why? Gerrard looked around training at London Colney on Monday and saw players like Andros Townsend flying, mocking this notion that he has a knock.
