Cardiff hosted Sunderland to conclude Saturday's action in the top flight.
The Bluebirds had been in turmoil on and off the pitch in recent weeks and went into their final match of the year hoping to avoid defeat which would drag them towards the bottom three.
Rock bottom Sunderland were on a high having recorded a shock victory at Everton on Boxing Day and could go within one point of the Premier League new boys with three points at the Cardiff City Stadium.
Cardiff looked to have the game won with a 2-0 lead seven minutes from the end, but Sunderland hit back to steal a 2-2 draw with a stoppage time equaliser.
