Lukas Podolski has admitted that he is open to leaving Arsenal if the club fails to assure him of regular playing time for the upcoming season.
After failing to secure a place in the Gunners’ starting lineup in the first half of last campaign, Arsene Wenger allowed the 30-year-old to join Inter Milan on-loan for the remainder of the 2014-15 season. Things did not go as planned for the forward as he returned to the Emirates after a disappointing spell in Italy.
It is still not sure whether Podolski will be able to get regular playing time at the North London club or not. However, the German intentional has made up his mind that he will leave the Premier League giants as he is not ready to continue to sit on the substitutes bench.
“For me to make an important decision, perhaps to stay in London, to give full throttle again and how to attack. I’m not going to get there and sit quietly on the bench,”Podolski told the Berliner Morgenpost.
“If it is a new club, I have to make the right decision. Because it is perhaps the last big contract for me.”
Arsenal have the services of Olivier Giroud as the first choice striker in the squad. The Frenchman has been in superb form for his side in the second half of the last season. In addition to this, Wenger has the England international duo of Danny Welbeck and Theo Walcott, who can play up as a central striker.
Walcott has one year left on his contract and has not signed a new deal. He could be forced to leave his current employers if he decides against signing a contract extension. If that happens, it is more likely that Arsenal will look to replace him in the transfer market.
After failing to impress in England and during his loan spell at San Siro, it is unlikely that Podolski will get a chance in the upcoming season as Arsenal will be looking to challenge for the title.
