Sir Alex Ferguson started off saying he wouldn’t sell Real Madrid a virus and ended up trading his best player, Cristiano Ronaldo. He really didn’t have much choice. And neither does Louis van Gaal if David de Gea’s head has been turned by the promise of a return to Spain at the Bernabeu.
De Gea’s contract expires at the end of next season, meaning he is within a year of being allowed to open free transfer negotiations with Real Madrid.
The word in Spain is that Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti is prepared to be patient and will work another season with Iker Casillas and Keylor Navas as his understudy in order to land De Gea on the cheap. This makes sense. Madrid are such a supreme attacking force that the goalkeeper’s position does not have to be a priority
There is talk of De Gea becoming the bait if Manchester United move for Gareth Bale but unless Bale is desperate to leave why would Madrid consider swapping?
They have no need to offer Bale to secure a player that could be theirs for nothing in less than 18 months.
With De Gea’s agent, Jorge Mendes, doing little to cement his client’s future at Old Trafford Van Gaal is beginning to sound quite negative about the negotiations. It would appear the trump cards are held by another club.
