The long-drawn Berti Vogts’ contract saga finally ended on Wednesday night when the Nigeria Football Association (NFA) formally severed their relationship with the German tactician.
According to the Glass House Vogts has been sent a Letter of Termination of Contract as the Super Eagles’ Head Coach.
The 61-year-old 1974 World Cup winner with Germany had earlier been served with a 30-day Notice of Termination, in line with the letter and spirit of the contract he signed with the NFA in London on February 6th last year.
Signed on for three-and-half years, Vogts endangered his position with constant quarrels with his employers, snide remarks about the Nigeria federation and failure to take his team to the semi finals of the African Cup of Nations in Ghana earlier in the year.
However, there are strong indications that this is not the last to be heard since Vogts has already said that he wanted the case to be settled by the arbitration committee of FIFA in line with the terms of the contract.
While the Glass House has indicated that it was willing to pay the German his three months salaries plus his outstanding medical expenses, Vogts is pressing for more.
Meanwhile, the NFA is expected to name an indigenous handler sometime next week, as the Super Eagles look forward to the start of the 2010 World Cup/Nations Cup qualifying series in 10 weeks time.
And in a related development the FA tackled its critics insisting that they should deal in facts.
Association spokesman Ademola Olajire said in Abuja that certain reports in a section of the media of recent have been needlessly virulent, and totally out of context.
“No one is saying that people should not point out faults in order for us to continuously seek to excel in the running of the Nigeria game. There is nothing wrong with constructive criticism. However, it is clear some persons have other things in mind when they go up against the FA.
“In every area of our national life, as a nation, we need to improve in the way we do things, not just at the NFA. Anyone who does not know that is living in a fool’s Paradise”.
