Despite their unimpressive run of form in the on-going domestic league, the management of Gombe United is optimistic the team would cancel the two away goals deficit conceded against Motema Pembe of Congo in its debut CAF Champions’ League match.
Chairman of Gombe State FA, Alhaji Auwalu Umar aka ‘Chelsea’ who doubles as the Vice Chairman of the team and presently the Acting Chairman told THISDAYSports that the away loss was not abnormal.
According to him: ''What matters to Gombe people and Nigerians in general is that Gombe United succeeds in its quest do the nation proud by making the lucrative stage of the tournament. Both the players and coach have promised they would deliver on this.”
The chairman insisted that the players gave a good account of themselves in Congo two weeks ago and lost due to poor officiating.
“We are aware of the consequences of loosing out at this stage and so we are going to put in our best fight and stay in contention for the ultimate prize. Unlike the poor officiating in Congo, if we can get a better and fair deal from officials, we’ll sure sing the victors’ song in the end,” said the chairman.
To this end, the chairman called on the Governor and the good people of the state to turnout en masse to cheer the team to victory on Sunday.
Meanwhile, the Acting Chairman of Gombe United has dismissed apprehension about the likelihood of CAF not approving the Abubakar Umar Memorial Stadium, Gombe for its competitions insisting the play ground is shoulder high above the stadium in which Motema Pembe hosted them a forthnight ago.
