The 26th edition of the African Nations Cup (CAN) in football started on Sunday, with a colourful opening ceremony held in the Ghanaian capital city, Accra, a festival that involved over 3000 people, with the promise of a competitive tournament, in which Angola is participating for the fourth time.
In this edition of CAN, the title holders (Egypt), the host team (Ghana), as well as Cameroon, Senegal and Nigeria will have the extra pressure of justifying the favouritism being placed on them.
Angola are in group D, based in Tamale City, with South Africa, Senegal and Tunisia. Although the last two mentioned teams are seen as favourites of the group, even considering their position in the African ranking, Angola and South Africa feel stimulated by the fact that they will host the next two most important football competitions to happen in the continent.Angola will host, in 2010, the African Nations Cup, and South Africa will organise, in the same year, the World Championship.
Thus, Angola have definitely set as priority passing through to the next phase of the competition.
Angola's opening game is on Wednesday against South Africa.
