Calabar to be prepared as venue for Nigeria’99 Junior World Cup

Governor Liyel Imoke of Cross River State says the state will put all the necessary infrastructure in place to enable Calabar qualify as one of the venues to host next year’s FIFA Under-17 World Cup.
While receiving FIFA Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the tournament after inspecting facilities in Calabar, Imoke noted that the State has passion for football because it was first played in Calabar before any other town in Nigeria, adding that facilities which were used during Nigeria’99 Junior World Cup will be improved upon for the state to meet FIFA’s requirements.
According to Imoke, the state deserves to host the tournament because it is an event that will boost its tourism programme as well as bring the environmental quality of the state to lime light, which in turn will boost the image of Nigeria.
Imoke disclosed that Calabar is devoid of traffic jams and confusion because the city is well planned and looks green and clean, assuring that issues raised by the LOC will be addressed especially in the medical sector because Government is determined to improve on its Primary Health-Care delivery service.
The Vice Chairman and Chief Executive of the FIFA LOC Inspection team, Mr. Mainasara Ilo said they were in the state to visit proposed venues and facilities for the FIFA Under-17 World Cup 2009, which includes the main stadium, training grounds, FIFA/team hotels and proposed referral medical institutions.
