Liberian Peace and Reconciliation Football Tournament Hits In Grand Style

The long awaited Peace and Reconciliation Football Tournament organized by Liberia's Soccer Ambassador George Weah ended in a grand style with series of activities at the Samuel Kayon Doe Sports Complex in Paynesville.

Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and the leader of the opposition, Congress for Democratic Change, Ambassador George Weah have lit a torch as a symbol for peace and reconciliation in the country. At a New Year Day ceremony Tuesday at the Samuel Kanyon Doe sports complex, both President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and Ambassador Weah spoke of the need for Liberians to reconcile their differences to ensure national development.

President Johnson Sirleaf, urged Liberians to unite as a people under one destiny, where each and every Liberian can feel that they have a stake in the development of the nation. The President thanked organizers of the peace festival for the initiative and pledged her government's support toward such programs aimed at uniting the country and its people.

For his part, the CDC leader, Ambassador Weah thanked the Liberian President for honoring the invitation to attend the Peace festival and urged Liberians to work toward the achievement of lasting peace and national reconciliation. Mr. Weah said without peace, national development efforts would be undermined. Ambassador Weah said it was time that Liberians work together to move Liberia forward by placing the interest of the country above self interest.

The National Peace Festival which brought together former players of the Liberian National Team, as well as local artists, was organized by a local phone company, Lone Star.

Following the resumption of the second and final half, the Invincible Eleven (IE) increased the margin to seven due to several deceptive moods that kept the defense of Barrolle flat-footed.

In the dying minutes of the game, Barrolle brought in substitute George Kailondo and Euegine Nagbe who later change the red boys style of playing and begin to pressure the defense of IE thereby leading to a consolation goal scored by Elijah Dee. Few minutes to end of the match IE sealed the doom by concluding the match 8-1
