MANCHESTER UNITED have stepped up their hunt for a defender, by opening talks over a £30m move for Marquinhos.
The Paris Saint-Germain defender has slipped behind David Luiz in the pecking order at the Parc des Princes, prompting speculation over his future.United have been tracking Mats Hummels and Aymeric Laporte, but Louis van Gaal is reticent to raise his £25m offer for the Athletic Bilbao defender.
Van Gaal has made an approach for Marquinhos, and PSG will only sell if they can recoup the full £30m they stumped up for him in 2013.
The Lionel Messi saga has taken another twist, with Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini suggesting the Citizens could try to gazump rivals United and Chelsea with a gargantuan offer.
United appeared to be leading the chase, with reports surfacing yesterday that Adidas would help fund a £200m bid.
But Pellegrini has opened the door to a move for the Argentine superstar when he said: "It's normal we are linked with the best players in the market."
