Lagos State government has insured all the 300 athletes participating in the on-going National School Sports Festival (NSSF) holding at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere with N500 million for the duration of the games, which ends on March 19.
The insurance policy tagged ‘Group Personal Accident Assurance’ covers the athletes, officials and spectators at the stadium.
Special Adviser to the state governor on Youths Sports and Social Development, Dr. Dolapo Badru who made this known in Ikeja yesterday, said Lagos is hosting the first national school sports festival in the country and as such is setting the pace for other states to follow.
According to him, providing insurance is a mandatory requirement for Nigeria school sports federation in all its local and international sports competition and to protect the children athletes against death and injury.
While the state put the insurance cover at N100, 000 for each athlete, the insurance company, LASACO Assurance Plc has increased it to N200, 000.
The Managing Director, LASACO Assurance Plc,Mr. Ladipo Ajayi said the state is the foremost insurance government in Nigeria and that the insurance cover for the children was just a replicate of what the government has done for its workforce.
