Angola's national senior women team of handball Thursday in Luanda confirmed its hegemony in the sport in the continent, after beating Cote d'Ivoire 39-27 in the final of the 18th African Cup of Nations (CAN'08), thus qualifying for the Olympic Games of Beijing, China.
Angola were winning the match 18-13 by the half time and secured the 9th CAN trophy and six consecutive win. It was the only team unbeaten in the women competition, having benefit from the Cidadela full house to beat the opponent.
With Thursday night victory, Angolan head of State, who watched the game in person, was awarded the merit medal by the African Handball Confederation, for his contribute to the sport.This is the first time the Angolan national senior women tem of handball wins a CAN at home.
Ahead of the women final, Egypt and Tunisia (men) played the final won by the former by 27-25, in a match marked by an equilibrium between the two nations.
Thus, Angola (women) and Egypt (men) have qualified for the 2008 Olympic Games of Beijing, scheduled for September.
