Namibia:Frank Fredericks Foundation Encourage athletes with cash

THE Frank Fredericks Foundation (FFF) yesterday announced more scholarships for athletes as part of its annual contribution to assist in the academic and sporting careers of Namibian athletes.

The chairman of the FFF Board of Trustees, Frank Fredericks, yesterday announced that for the 2007/8 period, the foundation has given out scholarships worth N$80 100 to 15 athletes.

The ones who benefited are seven boys and eight girls.

That excludes financial contributions that have been given to athletes in other codes for especially their international competitions.

Fredericks said the scholarships are given to talented Namibian athletes primarily based on their performance during the year.

Most of the athletes who benefit from the foundation also compete in the annual Coca-Cola Frank Fredericks Invitational, which pits the top eight athletes in the country in each discipline against each other.

He said half of the scholarship should be used for educational purposes, while the other half can be used to buy sport equipment.

He said the foundation does not give cash to the beneficiaries, but request them to submit a list of their needs and the amounts required.

"The foundation pays directly for the goods and services to the school or the institution where the athletes are purchasing their equipment.

You can claim school fees, hostel fees, tours, spikes, running shoes and if you have any other request we will be happy to look at it," he said.

Namibia's 200-metre runner Tjipekapora Herunga late last year received N$15 000, the biggest scholarship for the period under review.

Yesterday, Fredericks announced that Reagon Ngoshi, who runs the 200 and 400 metres, and Keshia Kalomo, who competes in the 100m and long jump, will each receive N$9 400.

He further said Leroy Bock (400m), Richard Wolman (100m) and Merilyn Diamond (100 and 200m) will each receive scholarships worth N$7 200.

Mervin Kamuingona, who competes in the 200m discipline, will receive N$4 700.Eight other athletes received scholarships of N$2 500.

They are: Dantago Gurirab (100m), Chalan Klazen (800m), Ryno Katroli (high jump), Jolene Jacobs (100m), D.

Joone (100m), Mathe Mutangara (800m), Ottilie Shakela (800m) and Lavinia Haitope (1 500m).
