AFCON 2008:Abedi Pele to honour IBTC promotional tour

Ghanaian legend, Abedi Pele, is expected in Nigeria on January 15 to begin a three-day promotional tour of the 26th African Cup of Nations beginning in Accra on January 20.

IBTC Chartered Bank Plc is bringing Abedi and the Nations Cup trophy to Nigeria, according to a press statement signed by Ezedi Udom.

The Bank is sponsoring a series of road shows, school visits, novelty football matches and a prestigious Trophy Tour Gala Nite dinner that will be attended by Abedi with the Cup.

Udom said the objective was to let Nigerians share in the pre-tournament excitement of the Nations Cup finals.

He quoted the acting Managing Director of IBTC Chartered Bank Plc, Mrs. Sola David-Borha, as saying, “Our parent company, Standard Bank, is the official sponsor of the MTN Africa Cup of Nations Ghana 2008. So by bringing the trophy to Nigeria, we are reaping the rewards of our Bank’s pan-African group and its commitment to football.

“Nigerians will have the opportunity to share in the glory and to honour the legacy of great players such as Samuel Eto’o, Didier Drogba and Abedi Pele himself.”

The Nigerian celebration is one leg of a series of cross continental events, officially dubbed the “Trophy Tour”, which is the brainchild of the Ghana 2008 Local Organising Committee.

The current gold-plated Nations Cup trophy, which was unveiled in 2001, is the third Cup and was first won by Cameroun in 2002 and Tunisia in 2004.

The first of the three trophies- the “Abdelaziz Abdallah Salem” trophy, was permanently awarded to Ghana in 1978 when it became the first country to win the tournament three times. The second trophy, the “African Unity Cup”, was permanently awarded to Cameroun in 2000, also having won the tournament three times.
