Zenit Saint Petersburg midfielder Axel Witsel has revealed that he dreams of playing in the Premier League and has opened the door for a move to Manchester United.
The 26-year-old joined the Russian club from Benfica in 2012 and has still over two years left on his contract with his current employers. He was believed to be linked with a move to England, before he signed for Zenit.
Witsel, who was the part of the Belgium squad for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil revealed that he loves United and has expressed his desire to ply his trade in the Premier League, which according to him is the best league in the world.
“I have always liked Manchester United from when I was young,” Witsel told Bleacher Report.
“I want to play in one of the top clubs in Europe one day. It’s true that I like the Premier League, because it is one of the best league’s in the world, for me, together with Germany and Spain.”
“It is a very good league, it is a crazy league. A lot of my colleagues play there, but we will see. I am still young, only 26. We‘ll see in the future,” he added.
When asked about recent rumours linking him with a move to Arsenal and AC Milan, Witsel said, ” No, these rumours are in the newspapers. I don’t know anything about it. I am here in Qatar training to be focused on my team Zenit and to try to regain a good physical condition. Even during the holidays I did not think about leaving, I am focused.”
Witsel is a versatile player as he can feature as a central midfielder, attacking midfielder and also as a right winger. With the Belgium star’s qualities and his latest comments, it should be seen if any of the top Premier League clubs could make an approach for his services.
It should be seen if Louis van Gaal will make an approach for the midfielder and bring him to the Premier League. However, the Dutchman’s priority will be to sign defensive players and also tie down David De Gea to a new contract in order to end the recent speculations linking him with a move to Real Madrid.
