2008 Programme:Traditional Sports activities released

The Traditional Sports Federation of Nigeria has planned a sensitisation exhibition workshop for middle of the month to flag off its activities for 2008.

The one-day workshop expected to hold in Lagos is to feature seven traditional sports like Dambe, Ayo, Langa, Wrestling, Abula amongst others.

Speaking at a briefing yesterday to herald the new season, Clement Iyaluegbeghe, secretary general of the federation said that the sensitisation workshop became necessary because some of the corporate bodies that would have been interested in sponsoring some events claim ignorance of what such events are all about.

"Since 2005 when this new board came in, it has carried out a number of programmes but because we want to improve on this, it becomes necessary to sensitise more Nigerians to what we are doing so that we can attract sponsors," observed the traditional sports scribe.Iyaluegbeghe looked back at the past year with satisfaction, insisting that traditional sports fared better than most sports.

"Nigeria again for the first time participated in the West Africa Traditional Wrestling Championship in Dakar, Senegal where we finished second behind the host country. Also two of our traditional wrestlers featured in the 16th Festival of Martial Arts and came back with silver medals," stressed the scribe.

While thanking the National Sports Commission (NSC) for the support, Iyaluegbeghe listed funding as major obstacle standing between the federation and the eight programmes listed for the new year.
