C.Ronaldo the best paid footballer on the planet,

Cristiano Ronaldo's new Real Madrid contract makes him not only the best paid footballer on the planet, but also the best paid individual in the history of the sport.

Under the terms of the five-year deal announced by the Liga club yesterday, the Portugal international is to be paid a basic salary of €21 million net. Ronaldo will earn performance bonuses and substantial image right payments on top.

The figures, which precisely double the then-unprecedented wage Ronaldo agreed upon joining Madrid in 2009, equate to a weekly basic of €403,000, underlining the scale of the forward's sporting and commercial prowess.

Ronaldo's improved salary nets at €1m a year more than the after-tax sum Samuel Eto'o was paid at Anzhi Makhachkala before the Russian club's billionaire owner dispensed with the African's services last month.

Payable for five seasons, the total value of Ronaldo's contract also far exceeds that of Eto'o's former three-year contract. A number of elements contributed to Jorge Mendes' success in negotiating such a deal.

First, the player's agent had calculated that Ronaldo would be able to achieve a signing-on fee of between €50m and €70m had he elected to run down the final two seasons of his existing contract and leave the Santiago Bernabeu as a free agent.

Having assessed the 28-year-old's potential commercial value to the club, Manchester United were positioned alongside Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain and Monaco as potential future employers.

Second, Florentino Perez did not want to risk the political fallout of allowing an individual who has scored 203 goals in 203 Madrid appearances for Madrid to leave the club during a summer in which the Madrid president had seen Neymar join Barcelona despite budgeting €100m to recruit the young Brazilian.

And Perez knew the sheer financial value of Ronaldo to an organisation that has just announced record revenues of €520.9m for 2012-13.

With 21.3 million followers on Twitter and 60.4m Facebook fans, Madrid's most famous player, Ronaldo's social media reach exceeds that of his employer by more than 60 percent.

Madrid are said to have sold over a million Ronaldo replica shirts in his first year there alone.

Madrid have, however, attempted to underplay the value of their principal asset's new contract, leaking a reduced figure to the local press.

The tactic echoes their handling of Gareth Bale's global-record transfer from Tottenham, a €100m transaction that Madrid sought to have reported as €91m.

Victor Moses to be a success at the club Liverpool this season.

Liverpool legend, John Aldridge has tipped Nigerian winger, Victor Moses to be a success at the club this season.

Moses, who completed a loan switch from Barclays English Premier League club, Chelsea on transfer deadline day is joined at the Anfield club by Tiago Ilori and Mamadou Sakho.
Writing in his Liverpool Echo column, Aldridge who represented the Republic of Ireland at the 1994 Fifa World Cup in the United States predicted a happy time for the Nigerian at Merseyside.

"The manager (Brendan Rodgers) had been looking for another attacking threat from out wide and I think the loan signing of Victor Moses will prove to be very shrewd,” he wrote.

Aldridge then took the time to highlight the qualities of Moses which he said would prove invaluable in the Reds' charge for honours this term.

"Moses is quick and skilful. His scoring record at Chelsea last season - 10 goals in 43 appearances - was decent considering he didn't start that often.

"It's a similar scenario to when we signed Daniel Sturridge. Moses has come to Anfield with a point to prove after not getting game-time at Stamford Bridge,” he noted.

Moses was in attendance as Liverpool beat Manchester United 1-0 at Anfield to go top of the Barclays Premier League table.

"I'm sure sitting and watching Liverpool beat Manchester United at Anfield on Sunday will have put fire in his belly.

"The Nigeria international will be relishing the prospect of pulling on the shirt and playing in that kind of atmosphere," he concluded.

W/Cup 2014: England humilated Maldova

England rose to top of World Cup qualifying Group H but this victory came at a cost. Danny Welbeck collected two goals but also a yellow card which rules him out of England’s crucial game with Ukraine on Tuesday.
It could be James Milner starting on the left now, particularly with Daniel Sturridge not expected to recover from a thigh problem in time. Otherwise this was a fairly satisfactory night. Steven Gerrard scored and was good throughout. Rickie Lambert continued to enjoy his late-starting international career, making it two in two. Poland’s draw with Montenegro also was a positive for England. This had been the last of the straightforward games for England. They now head to Kiev with Hodgson knowing he has to make changes that could define his reign. England will definitely be without Welbeck, who was cautioned by the Slovak referee for kicking the ball away after the whistle had blown for offside.

Van Persie is ready to work with Moyes

Rumours surfaced suggesting Van Persie had not been impressed by Moyes' reign so far after replacing Sir Alex Ferguson at the helm of the Premier League champions. The Dutchman started this campaign well, netting both goals in United's Community Shield win over Wigan and another double in the comfortable opening-day triumph at Swansea - but he has not scored since. Indeed, he has barely had a chance of note in the draw with Chelsea and defeat at Liverpool on Sunday, where his only opportunity came near the end, which he slid into the side-netting. However the Dutchman, who is away on international duty with Holland, has moved to dispel the rumours and insists he is enjoying working under former Everton
manager Moyes. "It's great working with the new manager David Moyes," Van Persie is quoted as saying in De Telegraaf. "He has his own style and methods and I like these. "We are working very hard from the day we started our tour to Asia and Australia. This will result in good matches, that's for sure. There is a very good atmosphere at the club. "I'm happy with the style of Moyes. He does his own training sessions, he's close with the players and prepares us with his staff very well for the next opponent. That keeps us in shape. "Luckily, because the title of last year gave us hunger for more." Van Persie was United's big acquisition last year, but Moyes almost missed out on a star signing this time. In the end United managed to recruit Belgium international Marouane Fellaini from Everton in the final minutes before the transfer window closed, bolstering their midfield options, but they missed out on targets including Leighton Baines, Ander Herrera, Cesc Fabregas, Sami Khedira and Fabio Coentrao. So eager were United to land Fellaini that they ended up paying £27.5million - £4million more than if they had exercised an option in the player's contract which expired at the end of July.

2014W/Cup: Malawi are ready to shock Super Eagle

The Belgian has stated that it will take a miracle for the Flames to defeat the more established Super Eagles in Calabar but they are willing to take their chances Malawi technical adviser Tom Saintfiet has said his team will go into Saturday's 2014 World Cup qualifier against Nigeria as underdogs. The Belgian also declared that his team will expect a miracle to happen in order to beat the African champions.
Saintfiet spoke to the media at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport, Abuja as his team boarded their Arik Air flight to Calabar on Thursday afternoon. The flight was however delayed for almost two hours due to visibility problems. "I am very satisfied with my squad,” Saintfiet said. “The present team is full of young players who are ready to play in the tactical way we want them to play. Every team needs a bit of luck. The team is ready to play and I think we can recover from the flight in the next 48 hours. "The match against the Super Eagles is not do or die affair for us. We have prepared well for this match and have an equal chance of winning the game. I believe the pressure is on Nigeria. But we will try and surprise everybody by playing a great game against Nigeria on Saturday. "Nigeria are the champions of Africa. They are a very strong squad selected by coach Stephen Keshi. He selected a very strong team comprising of good players from Europe and local based players too. It is going to be very difficult for us. The Nigerian team has a lot of strength and quality in front of goal and are very good in the air and they can score from set pieces too. "Despite this, the Nigerian team also has some weaknesses and we are going to use that against them,” Saintfiet disclosed.

Sept. 7 World Cup qualifier against Malawi in Calabar

Lagos — Paul Hamilton, a former coach of the Super Falcons, on Wednesday warned Coach Stephen Keshi of the Super Eagles not allow distraction truncate his success so far in the senior national team.
Hamilton, commenting on the Sept. 7 World Cup qualifier against Malawi in Calabar, said on telephone that Keshi now needed more concentration than ever. "Keshi has been successful so far in his quest to qualify Nigeria for the World Cup and so should not allow for distraction at this crucial hour. "By now, Keshi should have overcome the issue raised by Malawi citing insecurity in Calabar and remain focused because the match will decide Nigeria's chances for the last round of the qualifier. "He should try and focus on winning this match, that's my opinion. He has a task at hand which is winning the match against Malawi in Calabar. "It's purely mind games to distract him from concentrating on the job at hand; things have been working well for him so why stop now because of this glitch. "The Malawians knew that Keshi has not lost at that venue before and so was trying every means to detract Keshi from concentrating," he said. On the acceptance of 23 players submitted by Keshi by the Technical and Development Committee of the Nigeria Football Association, Hamilton said it was a sign of more success for the coach. "I'm happy the list was accepted by the NFA, Keshi knows the team and players best so he is in the best position to pick those that can go together. "He has been building them for a while and they have a pattern and I think if he goes with that, the Eagles will do good," Hamilton said. He then called on Nigerians to give their utmost support to the Eagles on Sept. 7 to ensure final round qualification. Nigeria is topping Group F with nine points needed a draw in the match to qualify for the last round of the qualifier. The Flames of Malawi, however, needed to win the match to qualify for the final elimination round. The Flames are expected to arrive in Nigeria via Accra on Sept. 5.

Fellaini waived £4 million in loyalty bonuses to get Man Utd deal done

On a day when Manchester United pursued the signings of Fellaini, Leighton Baines, Ander Herrera and Fabio Coentrao, as well as making an early-morning inquiry into the availability of Mesut Özil prior to his move from Real Madrid to Arsenal, the champions headed into the final hour of the window with nothing to show for their summer-long efforts to strengthen the squad. Everton’s refusal to sell Baines and Real Madrid’s failure to sign off a season-long loan deal for Coentrao, because of the collapse of their move for Granada full-back Guilherme Siqueira, had denied Moyes a new left-back as cover for Patrice Evra. The United manager, who pulled out of a move for Athletic Bilbao midfielder Herrera late on Monday evening after refusing to meet the Spanish club’s £30.5 million valuation, looked to be on the verge of missing out on Fellaini following a similar stand-off with Everton over the Belgian’s price tag. With Everton demanding £27.5 million and Moyes unprepared to offer beyond the £23.5 million escape clause in Fellaini’s contract, which expired on July 31 but was due to be reactivated on Jan 1, the 25-year-old broke the deadlock by waiving £4 million in loyalty bonuses to get the deal done in the final hours of the transfer window. By submitting a transfer request shortly before 8pm, Fellaini ensured Everton would not be forced to pay the player £4 million in loyalty bonuses, enabling the two clubs to agree a deal worth £27.5 million to the selling club.
It also meant United would pay the £23.5 million figure regarded by Moyes as the limit of his valuation of a player he signed for Everton for £15 million from Standard Liège in 2008. The chaotic manner of United’s transfer dealings has prompted criticism of Moyes and chief executive Ed Woodward, with the two failing to land any of the club’s priority targets this summer. A renewed move for Herrera is expected when the transfer window reopens in January, but The Daily Telegraph understands that the bid for Fellaini would have failed had the player not chosen to sacrifice his loyalty bonuses. “I am thrilled to sign for Manchester United,” Fellaini said. “I have known the manager for many years now and I have a lot of respect for his way of working. When I was given the opportunity to work with him again, I jumped at the chance. "I had a fantastic time at Everton and I’d like to thank all the fans and staff there for everything they have done for me, but being a Manchester United player is something that every player dreams of and I believe that I can make a real contribution to the team’s efforts to win trophies in the future.” Moyes, who had been determined to sign two midfielders this summer, added: “I have worked with Marouane for five years and I’m delighted he has decided to join Manchester United. He is a player with great ability and strength and I think he will make a real difference to our squad.” Fellaini, handed the number 31 shirt by United, is expected to make his club debut against Crystal Palace at Old Trafford on Sept 14 following international duty with Belgium against Scotland this week. While Moyes had been keen to add Herrera to his squad alongside Fellaini, the Scot instructed Woodward to abandon attempts to sign the 24-year-old after failing to persuade Bilbao to lower their valuation. United, having offered £26 million for Herrera last Thursday, refused to meet the £30.5 million escape clause in the player’s contract, with Moyes taking the view that the midfielder did not justify a fee second only to the £30.75  million club-record signing Dimitar Berbatov. Senior figures at United have made it clear that Moyes remains a big admirer of Herrera, however, and that efforts are likely to be made again to take him to Old Trafford, potentially during the January transfer window. Despite claims in the Spanish media of ‘impostors’ arriving at the Spanish league offices on Monday afternoon purporting to be representing United in negotiations for Herrera, the club have stressed that the three men, understood to have been sports lawyers, had no involvement in the transfer failing to go through. United have insisted that the collapse of the deal was merely due to the two clubs being unable to agree on the player’s valuation and Moyes deciding, as with his move for Baines, that bids would not be made beyond his own view on a player’s value. United, meanwhile, have confirmed the £700,000 deadline-day signing of FC Zurich 17-year-old Saidy Janko.
